(Japanese with rough and dirty English translation)

もし日本語が英語みたいに世界で通用する国際語だったら、きっとこんな感じだと思う。
( If Japanese language is like English that works everywhere in the world, I would imagine Japanese will face this kind of situations. )
 
 　田舎の普通の高校に通っていても結構な頻度で世界各地からの留学生が来て、いろんな文化をいつの間にか吸収出来る様になるのだとおもう。
　しかし、コンビニでアルバイトしようとしても、あまりにも時給が安くて、日本語がけっこうぺらぺらで海外から来た労働者、留学生以外はとてもアルバイトなんか出来なくなる。
　しかも適当に高校を卒業して、そこらへんで就職しようとしても工場には途上国から来た出稼ぎ労働者があふれていて、死ぬほど真面目で人生かかってる彼らと戦って、勝てる訳は無い。

 ( Even if you are a high school student in a local area of Japan, you will be able to interact with a number of students coming from all over the world, and can feel and understand their culture which are very different to yours.
  But if you would like to have a part-time job, it may be difficult because the minimum wage is so low and there are many candidates who can speak enough-level Japanese and are willing to accept severe working conditions.
  You may want to just get out of your high school and find a job, instead of working hard towards the examinations. But in factories, you will see a number of serious workers who left their family behind them and work for the future of their entire family. Do you think you can compete with? )


　それじゃあ頑張って大学に進学しようとしたら、東京大学も、京都大学も、慶應大学も、早稲田大学も、一橋大学も、東工大も、そして誰も知らないような地方の大学も、特に中国やインド、さらにはヨーロッパからの留学生で一杯で、あまりの競争に希望の進路に進学出来ないこともありえる。少なくとも全体の３０％位、多ければ５０％の枠は留学生に持ってかれる。君は進学出来ないかもしれない。

 (So, then another option is to study hard and go to university, right? But I tell you what. Excellent universities in Japan, like Tokyo uni, Kyoto uni, Keio uni, Waseda uni, Hitotsubashi uni, To-ko uni, are the ultimate distinctions of the students in every parts of the world as well. Moreover, because so many people just want to learn Japanese, less famous universities in local ares are also the targets of them too. You should expect an intensive competition if you want to get the status. I would guess around 30-40% of the seats will be taken by the "outsiders".)


　じゃあもういいやって、普通の企業に就職しようとしたら、日本語が完璧で、日本人よりも日本的な留学生が死ぬ機で就職活動してて、しかも企業のために尽くしますとか言っている。しかも彼らは、日本語以外に少なくとももう一つ、完全に操れる言語を持っている。ほのぼの生きてきた純粋日本人はもう勝てっこない。かなりの人たちが就職活動に破れ、妥協し、必ずしも有力とは言えない企業で働くことになるのかもしれない。もちろん、入ってからも同じだ。完璧日本語を話す野望に溢れる同僚に囲まれて生きることになる。

(And, that's not the end of the story. After getting the seat. You have to compete with the candidates who can speak perfect Japanese, are very hard-worker, and are welling to devote themselves to the firm. 　さらに、政治的にも、「日本人」の存在感は薄まる。前の記事、（　http://www.kotosaka.com/article/109212313.html　）にも書いたが、オバマ大統領を当選させたのは、新しいアメリカすなわち移民であり、古いアメリカではない。データでこれほどクリアーに解る。古いアメリカは彼を否定しており、しかし、彼を否定するアメリカは、新しいマジョリティに否定されたのである。我々日本人の希望は、新しい日本にかき消されるかもしれない。

(US election is a typical example of this shift. Like I wrote in a blog article before, the success of Obama is because of the growing "non-natives" population in the US. He is denied by the natives, but are enthusiastically welcomed by the "new-natives" of the country.)


　これはきっと、サイレントテイクオーバーといえる。国境の垣根が低くなり、世界の大学や企業が優秀な人材を求めて触手を広げ、そして、世界の人材がより良い環境を求めて世界中を飛び回る現実の中で、実は世界公用語である英語を抱えるアメリカやイギリスに昔から済むネイティブは結構な、そして静かな危機に直面している。
　昔からのアメリカ人、昔からのイギリス人は、自分たちの言語が公用語であるが故に、かなりのチャレンジに直面しているのも他方では事実なのである。昔ながらの伝統的な現地人は、国際化し、自分たちの手を離れていく英語に、高いプライドを持ちつつ、しかし一方で高い代償を支払わせられている。

(This I call is the silent take over. National boundaries are becoming low. World class universities and companies are searching for the talents. World class talents, on the other hand, are looking for the best place in the world. In such situation, US and UK, the two countries with the world-official language, are facing silent, but significant change of the situations. They are proud of the fact that a number of people in the world are required to speak English; but are feeling that their language is becoming a "common" language.)



　例えば、イギリスでも北部スコットランドから来た学生や、アメリカでも南部から来た学生の英語は、大半の学生、そしてかなりの割合の教授には通じない。なぜか、彼らはネイティブではないから、大半は彼らの発音を理解出来ないのである。
　INSEADでもオックスフォードでも、そういった地方出身者の英語は、我々日本人の英語と同じく、「大体はつかめるんだけど、結局何言ってるかよくわからないんだよねー。」と評価される。
　イメージ的には、大阪弁を話している関西人が東大にきてそれでも大阪弁を話し続けようとすると、クラスの半数位から、彼何言ってるか解らないと思われ、しかし、大阪弁が「日本語」であり、彼が「ネイティブ」であるという遠慮から、大半の人がそれに文句を言わず受け流してシカトしているような状況だ。

(For example, students coming from local parts of US and UK (e.g., Scottish) are feeling difficulty in communication, because their language is so difficult for non-native speakers, including not only students, but also professors. I know their language is perfect, but it is so perfect and so different to what we call "English". We can understand some of it, but can not understand the detail of it. It is like you are coming from Kansai, Japan, and speak your language at a university in Tokyo, then found that over half of the class does not understand your language!)



　日本語は難しい。そして国際社会での利点が無い。しかし、日本は単体で未だに世界有数の経済規模を持っており、安全で、食文化に溢れ、暮らし易く、様々な気候を内包している。
　それがゆえに、日本は守られており、日本人は幸せに暮らしているという事実もある。日本語という障壁が、日本人が外に出る際の障壁になると同時に、海外の人が日本に大挙する際の障壁となって、我々、日本人を守っている。
　もしかしたら、日本本島はガラパゴスであってもいいのかもしれない。もし、我々が外に漕ぎ出し、外から継続的に事業収益を実現し続けられるのであれば。

 (Japanese is difficult, and is useless outside of Japan. But Japan alone is still one of the largest economy of the world. It is safe, with good food, nice living, and different climates. Thus, Japan is protected and its people can live without difficulty and with happiness. Japanese language is a high barrier for Japanese to go out, but at the same time, is a high barrier for other people who want to compete with Japanese and take the benefit of the success of Japan. Maybe, Japan does not have to open the country, as we have done in the past, if we can continuously be competitive in the globalised world in the future.）
